War Memorial Natatorium

Address Near 2815 Kalakaua Avenue, Honolulu, HI 96815 TMK (1) 3-1-031:003 SHPD Historic Site Number 80-14-9701 National Register of Historic Places #80001283 Abstract The War Memorial Natatorium contains a swimming complex that is situated along the oceanfront in Kapiolani Park and is surrounded by expansive lawns, coconut and banyan trees, and other vegetation. The property contains a 100-meter saltwater swimming pool, a set of concrete bleachers that rises thirteen levels high, a main entryway that includes an elaborate sculpture and triumphal arch entablature supported by Ionic pilasters and flanked by two lesser round arches, a set of locker rooms, and a volleyball and basketball court. The memorial is dedicated to the those from Hawaii who served in World War I. The War Memorial Natatorium is significant as a major social and recreational local landmark and for its association with the history of competitive swimming. Diamond Head Lighthouse

Address 3399 Diamond Head Road, Honolulu, HI 96816 TMK (1) 3-1-042:003 SHPD Historic Site Number 80-14-1338 National Register of Historic Places #80001282 Abstract The Diamond Head Lighthouse is a 57 foot white concrete pyramidal tower with a red roof. It sits seemingly on the side of a sharp cliff when viewed from seaward, and at night the light can be seen up to 18 miles by the mariner. The Lighthouse and accompanying buildings have not changed since 1917. Today, this station also serves as quarters for the commander of the 14th coast guard district. The Diamond Head Lighthouse was first established in 1899 to guide mariners into the then budding port of Honolulu and is significant for its association with the expanding port. Makapuu Point Lighthouse

The light tower itself is on concrete, surmounted by an iron lantern with glass storm panes which protect the lens and illuminating apparatus. Makapuu Point Lighthouse is significant as one of the most important Aids to Navigation in the Hawaiian islands. Kaneohe Ranch Building

It features a cedar shingled, double-pitched hip roof with overhangs and exposed rafters, and an inset lanai. The building sits on a landscaped lot with an extensive lawn, palms, and lauhala trees. The Kaneohe Ranch Building historically is significant for its associations with Kaneohe Ranch, and architecturally as a good example of the Hawaiian style of architecture developed in the 1920s and 1930s. Marconi Wireless Telegraphy Station

Address 56-1095 Kamehameha Highway, Kahuku, HI 96731 TMK (1) 5-6-003:032 SHPD Historic Site Number 80-02-9112 National Register of Historic Places #13000352 Abstract The Marconi Wireless Telegraph Station sits on a fairly level, approximately 89-acre, ocean-front parcel in Kahuku. The four concrete buildings range from one to two-and-a-half stories in height. Ample open space separates the four buildings and their distinct functions, with a recently made shrimp pond situated between the power house/operating building and the manager’s cottage and administration building. The Marconi Wireless Telegraph Station at Kahuku is significant at the state level for its associations with the development of wireless communications in Hawaii and the role it played in providing the islands with worldwide wireless telegraphic, and later telephonic communication. Kawailoa Ryusenji Temple

Address 179 A Kawailoa Drive, Haleiwa, HI 96712 TMK (1) 6-1-005:001 SHPD Historic Site Number 80-04-1337 National Register of Historic Places #78001019 Abstract The Kawailoa Ryusenji Temple was constructed in 1914 and is a one-story elevated wood-frame structure located off Kamehameha Highway. A community hall, cookhouse, parsonage, caretaker's residence, bath house, and sheltered purification rock are included within the boundaries of the nominated site. The Kawailoa Ryusenji Temple is significant as one of the best examples of a Japanese temple built during the sugar plantation period. It is also significant as one of the focal points of the community. It was geographically located at the center of Kawailoa Camp at the time of its initial construction.   Note: The Temple has been demolished, but the foundation steps and Prayer Tree remain. Waialua School

Address 66-505 Haleiwa Road, Haleiwa, HI 96712 TMK (1) 6-6-013:012 (portion) SHPD Historic Site Number 80-09-7396 National Register of Historic Places #80001271 Abstract Waialua School is a one-story rectangular stuccoed concrete structure with a wood frame gable roof and overhanging eaves with exposed rafters. It is rendered in the Spanish Mission style. The total building complex, completed in 1927, consisted of three structures symmetrically arranged about a central axis. The building located to the southwest of the main buidling was demolished in the 1960s. The other two buildings are still extant. Waialua School has architectural significance; the structure was designed by William D'Esmond and was constructed using concrete in the Spanish Mission style. Most of the local buildings built during this period were wood wall construction. In addition, this was the first school facility constructed in Waialua. Wakamiya Inari Shrine

Address 94-695 Waipahu Street, Waipahu, HI 96707 TMK (1) 9-4-010:098 SHPD Historic Site Number 80-09-1345 National Register of Historic Places #80001285 Abstract Built in 1914, the Wakamiya Inari Shrine is a rectangular frame building that is painted red, the traditional color for this Shinto sect's shrines. A shake-shingled Irimoya (hipped and gabled) roof with overhanging eaves, exposed rafters, and an ornamental ridgepole with a chigi (v-shaped projections) dominate the structure. The Wakamiya Inari Shrine is architecturally significant as the only example of this Shinto sect's traditional shrine architecture on Oahu. It follows the traditional Japanese forms and serves as a visual reminder of Japanese influence in Hawaii. The Inari are a minor Shinto sect primarily associated with the working classes, especially farmers. Chinatown Historic District

The older structures are made of brick, wood, or cut blue stone, and later structures are constructed of concrete or steel. Despite the relatively small proportion of Chinese actually residing in Chinatown, this area still provides the principal center for the business and social life of the entire Chinese community of the Island. Chinatown Historic District is significant for the central role it has played in the life of the Chinese community in Honolulu. Chinatown is also the one and only district in Honolulu which reflects vividly in its building, institutions, and people, the full impact of the city's role as a center of attraction for many diverse races and cultures. Merchant Street Commercial and Civic Historic District (Amended)

Address Various, Honolulu, HI 96813 TMK Various SHPD Historic Site Number 80-14-9905 National Historic District National Register of Historic Places #73000661 Abstract The Merchant Street Commercial and Civic Historic District is located in downtown Honolulu. This district was first listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. This amended form provides clarification of district contributing features, along with expanded description and significance sections, details the district’s history as well as its architectural character, and has added two buildings to the district (The Honolulu Star-Bulletin Building and the Alexander & Baldwin Building). Other new resources added to this district nomination are the site of the original Honolulu Hale and four objects: granite curbs and sidewalks, lava rock curbs, cannons, and a remnant of a cast-iron storefront. The name of the district has been amended from “Merchant Street Historic District” to “Merchant Street Commercial and Civic Historic District” to distinguish this nomination from the previous one. The district is an excellent example of an early commercial center in post-contact, pre-territorial, and Territorial Hawai‘i. As one of the first official streets in Hawai‘i and one of the city’s first economic hubs, it is significant under Criterion A for its role as ‘Honolulu’s Wall Street’, the location of the Honolulu Stock Exchange, banks, insurance companies, sugar factors, and commission agents. Four out of the five members of the ‘Big Five’ maintained their offices in buildings included within the District. The District is significant under Criterion C.
