Kaneohe Naval Air Station

Address Marine Corps Air Station Kaneohe Bay, HI TMK (1) 4-4-008:001; 4-4-various SHPD Historic Site Number 80-10-1386 National Historic Landmark District National Register of Historic Places #87001299 Abstract Construction of a naval air station on the western half of Mokapu Peninsula began in 1939. As of December 1941, two of the five planned steel hangars had been completed, each measuring 225 feet by 400 feet. The historic district includes the following nationally significant features: Hangar No. 1; the parking area between the hangars and Kaneohe Bay, and the five ramps. Kaneohe Naval Air Station is significant for its association with the Japanese attack on December 7, 1941. At 7:48 a.m., seven minutes before they bombed Pearl Harbor, Japanese fighters and five bombers attacked Kaneohe Naval Air Station. Palm Circle, 100 Area, Fort Shafter

Address Palm Circle Drive, Fort Shafter Honolulu, HI 96819 TMK (1) 1-1-008:005 SHPD Historic Site Number 80-14-9709 National Historic Landmark National Register of Historic Places #84000104 Abstract Palm Circle consists of a large, grassed parade ground in a roughly oval shape with fifteen two-story, frame officers quarters lining the north and east sides of Palm Circle Drive, which encircles the parade. Former enlisted men's barracks and other administrative buildings, including a swimming pool, border the southern side of the drive. They were constructed in 1907–1909. Palm Circle is significant for its association with World War II history in Hawaii. At the time Palm Circle housed the offices and quarters of the commanding general and his staff, U.S. Army Forces, Pacific Ocean Areas, which included all army forces in the Central Pacific and the South Pacific. Opana Radar Site

Address Kamehameha Hwy. Kawela, HI 96731 TMK (1) 5-7-002:002 SHPD Historic Site Number 80-02-9745 National Historic Landmark National Register of Historic Places #91001379 Abstract The Opana Radar site is situated on a knoll overlooking the Pacific Ocean, located 532 feet above sea level. It is the highest point in the Opana ahupuaa and provides an unobstructed view out to sea. Today a modern telecommunications station operated by the Navy occupies the top of the Opana Hill. The area is fenced and a roadway leads up from Kamehameha Highway to the site. This site is where radar was utilized for the first time in a combat situation. At this location on December 7, 1941, the Japanese squadron of airplanes was detected on radar prior to their attack upon Pearl Harbor. Linked with the 1984 National Historic Landmark District, this community represents a total heritage site. Functioning in the same capacity today as it did in the 1930s. it offers a valuable insight into the architecture and planning concepts of the time, the lifestyle, and the military mission. Fort Ruger Historic District

This includes five batteries, seven fire control stations, two tunnels, and one building dating from 1909–1921. The district encompasses a portion of the remnants of Oahu's earliest U.S. Army coastal defense fortification. The structures included in the district are significant as tangible reminders of the U.S. Army's presence at Diamond Head crater. These structures are associated with the role of the coast artillery system on Oahu. Fort Ruger is significant in the history of the military in Hawaii as the first coastal defense fortification established by the U.S. Army in the islands. Headquarters, Commander in Chief, Pacific Fleet

Address 4361 Salt Lake Boulevard Honolulu, HI 96818 TMK (1) 9-9-002:004 (portion) SHPD Historic Site Number 80-13-1384 National Historic Landmark National Register of Historic Places #87001295 Abstract Constructed in 1942, the headquarters building for the Commander in Chief Pacific Fleet was built on Makalapa Hill, across Kamehameha Highway from Halawa Gate, Pearl Harbor Naval Base. Originally, the white, reinforced-concrete structure had two stories above ground and a bombproof basement. By early 1945, an additional story had been built on top of the building. The CINCPAC building commemorates Admiral Chester W. Nimitz who became Commander in Chief, Pacific Fleet, shortly after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Admiral Nimitz restored confidence to the fleet. From 1942 until mid-December 1944, he commanded American land, sea, and air forces in the Central and North Pacific areas from his new headquarters at Pearl Harbor. Artillery District of Honolulu

Only those structures at Forts DeRussy and Kamehameha are under Army control and reflect the Rossevelt-Taft period of expanding American interest in the Pacific. The artillery sites are significant for their association with the coastal defense system for Pearl Harbor. Alexander Walker Residence is a two-story wood-frame structure built in 1905. The residence features a hip roof, eaves supported by decorative scroll brackets, clapboard siding on the first floor exterior, and wood shingles on the second level exterior. The H. Alexander Walker Residence is significant as one of the few intact estates that were built in the upper Nuuanu Valley around the turn of the 20th century. 2756 Rooke Avenue/ George de S. Canavarro House

Address 2756 Rooke Avenue, Honolulu HI 96817 TMK (1) 1-8-026:005 SHPD Historic Site Number 80-14-9713 National Register of Historic Places #80001274 Abstract The George de S. Canavarro House, also called Canavarro Castle, was built between 1924-1927 on the northwestern slopes of Nu'uanu Valley in Pu'u'nui adjacent to the Oahu Country Club. The house is significant for its architecture as an example of Mediterranean Revival Style, which was popular in Hawaii at this time. It was designed by renowned local architect Hart Wood and built by contractor/builder Kobayashi. The two-story cross-shaped house was built around a central courtyard open to the elements, with floor levels that terrace down the sloping site. 20 Old Pali Place/ Edgar & Lucy Kalanikumaikiekie Davis Henriques Residence

Address 20 Old Pali Place, Honolulu, HI 96817 TMK (1) 1-9-009:016 SHPD Historic Site Number 80-14-1367 National Register of Historic Places #84000202 Abstract The Henriques Residence was built in 1900 and is significant for its architecture and for its association with Lucy K. Peabody, and Edgar and Lucy Henriques. The house is a well preserved example of a turn-of-the-century kama'aina residence. Its splendid and extremely open interior, its dining room windows which open from the floor to allow added access to the porch, its large beveled glass front doors, and extensive use of single hung sash windows, are all typical of the period and well reflect the designer’s cognizance of the house’s semi-tropical environment. Few dwellings of this period still exist in Hawaii, and to find these features intact in such houses is extremely rare. The residence is also significant for its associations with Lucy K. Peabody, and Edgar and Lucy Henriques who were from a high ali'i family and descendants of Isaac Davis, the British seaman, who along with John Young served as an adviser to Kamehameha I, in his attempts to unite the Hawaiian Islands.
