Historic Hawai‘i Foundation members have shared some of the special places that enrich their lives.

Queen Lili‘uokalani Gardens, Hilo, Hawai‘i

Lili‘uokalani Park in Hilo is meaningful to me since I grew up in Hilo. This is a place my family and I would come to visit as a kid and a place I still like to take my grandmother to on a sunny day. It is a calm and peaceful park along Hilo Bay so it also has a great view of the town and the mountains behind it.

Kukuiolono Park, Kalāheo, Kaua‘i

This public park was once the home of Walter McBryde, who built his home here in 1907. He dedicated the park for the public in 1911. It is very special to me.

Hawaiian Electric Building, Honolulu, O‘ahu

The former Hawaiian Electric headquarters in Downtown Honolulu is a beautiful place filled with amazing design features and supposedly a few ghosts. It’s empty now and I worry about it every day.

Wailuanui (Waikani) Bridge, Hāna Highway, Maui

The early bridges and carriage roads designed at the beginning of the automobile age have special meaning to me. The historic district for Hāna Belt Road is especially wonderful.

Puʻu o Mahuka Heiau, Pūpūkea, O‘ahu

This is the largest heiau on O‘ahu and is a designated historic park. It is second largest heiau in the Islands (Maui having the largest). It is a gem that I hope to help State Parks restore so that more can enjoy the beauty of it.
