Abstract
The Ala Wai Villas are significant at the local level, under National Register Criterion C. Constructed in 1936 the buildings on the property are architecturally significant as an excellent example of early 20th century Mediterranean/Italianate Revival style in Waikiki. The property is one of a small number of surviving authentic examples of early housing developments built in the Waikiki area prior to the rapid development period since statehood in Hawaii and tourism led by Henry Kaiser in the 1950s. The sense of place has been retained over the years despite the high-rise structures that now surround the property.
