52 Halaulani Place/ Herbert Austin Truslow (Ellen G. Lyman) Residence

Address 52 Halaulani Place, Hilo, Hawaii 96720 TMK (3) 2-6-006:007 SHPD Historic Site Number 10-35-9069 National Register of Historic Places #11000060 Abstract The Truslow Residence sits on a sloping lot and the house overlooks Pukihae stream.  This bungalow-style residence is distinguished by an octagonal sitting room at its northeast corner and an outset lanai running across the remainder of the facade. The structure sits on a lava-rock post and pier foundation and the walls of the house are clapboard. The Truslow Residence is significant for its associations with the development of Halaulani Place as well as the development of Hilo.  This residence was one of the first five houses constructed on Halaulani Place and is associated with the Security Trust Company's vice president H. A. Truslow, as well as Ellen G. Lyman.  In addition, the property is also a good example of a bungalow constructed in Hawaii in the 1920s. 82 Halaulani Place/ Walter Irving and Jean Henderson Residence

Address 82 Halaulani Place, Hilo, Hawaii 96720 TMK (3) 2-6-006:004 SHPD Historic Site Number 10-35-9069 National Register of Historic Places #11000057 Abstract The Henderson Residence sits on a steep, heavily vegetated lot overlooking the Pukihae stream. The single story bungalow is distinguished by its front-facing gable roofed, lava-rock porch and double-hung sash windows with diamond panes in the upper sash. The Henderson Residence was constructed in 1925 and is architecturally significant as a good example of a bungalow constructed in Hawaii during the 1920s. Address Halaulani Place, Hilo, Hawaii 96720 TMK 2-6-006: 004, 007, 008, 011, 016, 017, 018, 025, 027 SHPD Historic Site Number 10-35-9069 Abstract The Halaulani District Multiple Property Nomination is for the houses located on Halaulani Place in Hilo, Hawaii. Halaulani Place was built between 1917 and 1960. It is considered one of the preeminent residential locations on Hawaii Island. The residences feature the work of many renowned architects.  It was highly influential in the growth and development of Hilo. In addition, to architecture and growth many of the houses orignial residents were significant in the history of Hawaii. Many of the houses feature bungalow tradition with the sole exception being the Lyman Home that was built in the Colonial Revival style. Crater Rim Drive

The 10.6-mile, two-lane, paved loop road circles the rim of Kilauea caldera, providing views of not only Kilauea but also of the smaller craters of Halemaumau, Keanakakoi, Puu Puai, and Kilauea Iki, in addition to spectacular lava flows, the Jaggar Museum, the Southwest Rift, steam vents, native vegetation, and Thurston Lava Tube. The Crater Rim Drive road is significant for its association with the history of National Park Service Road design and construction principles as well as the National Park Service Rustic style. It is also significant in the history of volcanology and the story of tourism and the Hawaiian islands. Hilina Pali Road

Mauna Loa Road

Honokaa Sugar Company Manager’s House

Address 48-5323 Kukuihaele Road, Honokaa, Hawaii 96727 TMK (3) 4-8-006:013 SHPD Historic Site Number 10-08-7514 Abstract The Honokaa Sugar Company Manager's House is a two-story Colonial Revival house with horizontal clapboard siding and a corrugated metal hip roof with gable projections. It features a large, wrap-around lanai that runs the entire makai side of the house to half of the west side. The house sits atop 14 acres of sloping lawns amid large Norfolk pines and eucalyptus trees. The Honokaa Sugar Company Manager's House is significant for its association with the development of sugar production on the Hamakua Coast and particularly the economic and social development of Honokaa, the second largest city on the Big Island. It is further significant as one of the few extant examples of the work of Honolulu architect Edgar Allen Poe Newcomb. Puakea Ranch

Address 56-2864 Akoni Pule Highway, Hawi, Hawaii 96719 TMK (3) 5-6-001:082 SHPD Historic Site Number 10-02-9071 Abstract Puakea Ranch lies along the mauka side of Akoni Pule Highway on 33 acres. The land is enclosed by dry laid lava-rock walls and has the remains of earlier generations of agricultural and ranching activities. Still extant are five traditional homes, a slaughter house, a fenced cow corral, and a saddle repair/storage shed. The five homes represent examples of local vernacular architecture. The site has been occupied through four eras of Hawaiian history. The land was first employed for Native Hawaiian agriculture. After contact with Europeans it was used as a sugar plantation and was developed by private entrepreneurs. Most recently, buildings on the site have been reused as a "bed and breakfast" operation. Kapue Stream Bridge

Address Mamalahoa Highway, Papaikou, Hawaii 96781 TMK (3) 3-2-007:004 SHPD Historic Site Number 10-26-9090 Abstract The Kapue Stream Bridge is a steel girder and trestle bridge with a total length of 415 feet and a roadway width of 28 feet. It is built at the deck elevation of 232 feet over Kapue Stream along the Hamakua coast of the Island of Hawaii. The superstructure of the bridge is composed of a concrete deck on steel girders, and the substructure is composed of c. 1911 steel railroad trestle supports with masonry (lava-rock) abutments. The Kapue Stream Bridge is significant for its association with the Hilo Railroad Company. In addition it is significant for its association with three founders of the Hilo Railroad Company and as a representative example of early 20th-century engineering technology, as well as, a source for information about early 20th-century steel manufacture and construction.
