Wallace Rider Farrington High School

Address 1564 North King Street, Honolulu, HI 96817 TMK (1) 1-6-021:005 SHPD Historic Site Number 80-14-9768 Abstract Wallace Rider Farrington High School is located in the urban setting of Kalihi and was built in 1939. The approximately 26-acre campus is surrounded by four major streets. This campus houses seventeen buildings which roughly form a semi-circle around the main building which is fronted by a wide grassy lawn and has a couple trees and sparse landscape. Only the main building, Building A, is included in this nomination. Wallace Rider Farrington High School is significant as it was built by prominent local architect Charles W. Dickey. In addition, the building was constructed during a turning point for the public secondary education system in Hawaii and Farrington's creation was part of a major expansion of the school system. Oahu Railway & Land Co. Depot & Document Storage Building

Address 333 North King Street, Honolulu, HI 968178 TMK (1) 1-5-007:002 SHPD Historic Site Number 80-14-1380 Abstract The O'ahu Railway & Land Company site includes both the Terminal Depot and Office & Document Storage buildings. The property is significant under Criterion A for its association with O'ahu Railway & Land Company. OR&L built O'ahu's rail system providing transportation for the sugar and pineapple plantations, military, and residents of O'ahu and advancing growth across the island. The property is also significant under Criterion C. Built in 1925 and designed by Guy Rothwell, the Depot is a two-story Spanish Mission Revival Style building constructed of stucco-covered, reinforced concrete with a gable-on-hip roof covered with red barrel tile and a four-sided clock tower and first story arcade. Built in 1914, the Office & Document Storage Building is a rare surviving example of Classical Revival Style architecture in Honolulu and exhibits several of its distinctive features including an accented front door with a pediment supported by pilasters and a symmetrical fa<;ade with centered doorway. The OR&L Terminal Property was previously placed on the Hawai'i State Register of Historic Places. This is an update to the original nomination form.

Palama Fire Station

Address 879 North King Street, Honolulu, HI 96817 TMK (1) 1-5-005:014 SHPD Historic Site Number 80-14-1346; 80-14-1302 Abstract The Palama Fire Station's basic structure is of English Bond brick and when it was built in 1901 it boasted all of the most modern equipment of the time. A 75' brick stucco fire hose drying tower immediately identifies the structure as a turn of the century fire station. The significance of the Palama Fire Station is it was designed by O.G. Traphagen, who was a turn of the century landmark architect, and it was the first fire station in Hawaii to utilize modern firefighting equipment. Also the buildings brickwork is a unique example of skilled masonry construction techniques. The building exhibits unique design characteristics of Mediterranean and Romanesque styles and was the first example of Mediterranean architecture in Hawaii. Hanapepe Town Lot #18 (Pool Hall)

Address 3865 Hanapepe Road, Hanapepe, Kauai 96716 TMK (4) 1-9-004: 008 SHPD Historic Site Number 30-09-9389 National Register of Historic Places #93001033 Abstract The former Pool Hall at Hanapepe Town Lot #18 is a long building which sits on the main road of the once thriving town.  The building is a one story, single wall building constructed of vertical tongue and groove boards.  The front elevation has a false front and an awning roof over the side walk. Pool Hall is a surviving example of the vernacular wood commercial buildings constructed in Hawaii in the early twentieth century.  The building is also significant for its associations with the growth of the town of Hanapepe. Russian Fort Elizabeth

Address Russian Fort Elizabeth State Historical Park, Waimea, Kauai 96766 TMK (4) 1-7-005: 003 SHPD Historic Site Number 30-05-1000 National Historic Landmark National Register of Historic Places #66000299 Abstract This 17.5 acre land parcel is the site of Russian Fort Elizabeth, a large irregular octagon-shaped stone structure, that sits on the banks of the Waimea River. It is 300 to 450 feet in cross diameter and features 25-45 foot rock walls some of which are 20 feet high, with the stone foundations of a magazine, barracks, and other buildings still extant. The Fort is the most impressive reminder of attempts by the Russians to gain a position of influence in the Hawaiian Islands during the early 19th century. Waimea Elementary & Jr. High School Homemaking & Classroom Buildings

Address 9707 Tsuchiya Road, Waimea, Kauai 96796 TMK (4) 1-6-010: 004 SHPD Historic Site Number 30-05-9391 Abstract Two pre-1940 classroom buildings sits on Waimea Elementary & Jr. High School campus in the heart of Waimea town. The 1936 Homemaking Building is the only extant school building on Kauai with this type of board and batten wall and the Classroom Building (which is currently being used as a dressing room) is a four-room building with a gable roof and inset lanai along the entire length of the building. These two buildings retain significant physical and associative integrity, despite the modern setting of the other school buildings, and show the developments in public education in the Territory of Hawaii, the architecture of Kauai's public schools and the specific history of the settlement of the Waimea area. Also, homemaking was the main vocational course of study for female students during the territorial period. Waimea Educational Center

Address 4540 Ola Road, Waimea, Kauai 96796 TMK (4) 1-6-007: 042 SHPD Historic Site Number 30-05-9316 Abstract The Waimea Educational Center is a board-and-batten, single-story structure with a gable roof and skylights. The building functions as a community center and gymnasium, has a raised stage platform on one end, and features a 120-foot longitudinal ridge beam with a series of scissor trusses and purlins. The buildings were designed during the 1930s by Hart Wood, one of the foremost architects in the Territory of Hawaii. Yamase Building

Address 4493 Moana Road, Waimea, Kauai 96796 TMK (4) 1-6-007: 032 SHPD Historic Site Number 30-05-9318 National Register of Historic Places #96000398 Abstract The Yamase Building is a two-story, wood-frame, tongue-and-groove structure that was built in a curved form on a corner lot along the main thoroughfare of Waimea, a small town in West Kauai. It has a rectangular wood shingle gable roof with small hip ends that cantilevers at the corner at approximately 20 feet from the first floor supporting wall and also features gable end walls with wood louvered vents. The Yamase Building is significant as a very distinctive representative of commercial architecture in rural Hawaii built by an itinerant Japanese temple builder named Murukama. It is also significant for its association with the development of commerce in Waimea town and the success of immigrants in Hawaii. Masuda Building

Address 9815 Laau Road, Waimea, Kauai 96796 TMK (4) 1-6-007: 030 SHPD Historic Site Number 30-05-9324 Abstract The Masuda Building is a single-story, wood-frame structure with a wood parapet and hip roof. The building's exterior form conforms to the curved corner lot configuration. The Masuda Building is an example of post-World War I commercial development in Waimea Town. The architectural style and design is an unique example of the work of an unnamed craftsman and Japanese temple builder. Bishop First National Bank

  Address 4525 Panako Road, Waimea, Kauai 96796 TMK (4) 1-6-006: 033 SHPD Historic Site Number 30-05-9311 National Register of Historic Places #78001026 Abstract The Bishop First National Bank (Bishop National Bank of Hawaii) is a single-story concrete structure that retains the majority of its original exterior appearance; however the interior has been extensively remodeled. The exterior features Ionic columns, a dentil cornice with crown molding, a partially balustraded parapet, and central stairs leading to the raised first floor entrance. The interior has a coffered ceiling, and in the center of the ceiling is a rectangular skylight with a molded frame. The Bishop First National Bank was designed by John Mason and built by J.L.
