Kahului Railroad Administration Building

Address 101 East Kaahumanu Avenue, Kahului, Maui, 96732 TMK (2) 3-7-010:036 SHPD Historic Site Number N/A Download Nomination Form The Kahului Railroad Administration Building is a single story, reinforced concrete building with a plaster finish, rendered in a classical revival style. The T-shaped building has a shallow-pitched, corrugated metal, hipped roof with overhanging closed eaves, and it sits on a 16"-high raised foundation. The building is significant on the local level under criterion C, as a good example of a classical revival style building constructed on Maui during the 1920s. It is also significant at the local level under criterion A for its associations with the Kahului Railroad, the first licensed railway in Hawaii. The Kahului Railroad Company was also the longest railroad to operate, remaining in business until 1966 and outlasting the other six public carrier lines in the Islands with an 87-year history of continuous operation. St. Philomena Church

Address Kalaupapa Peninsula, Kalawao, Molokai 96742 TMK (3) 6-1-001:001 SHPD Historic Site Number 60-03-1024 Abstract St. Philomena Church was built at the Kalaupapa Leprosy Settlement on Molokai between 1872 and 1889. The initial church was constructed in 1872 by the Hansen's disease patients living at Kalaupapa. Father Damien arrived in Kalawao in 1873 and helped expand the church twice. The original 1872 church was integrated into the expanded section and can be seen in the photos. The work on the church's second expansion finished the year after his death. St. Philomena is now a part of the Kalaupapa National Park under the management of the National Park Service. St. Joseph Catholic Church

Address 5900 Kamehameha V Highway, Kaunakakai, Molokai 96748 TMK (3) 5-6-008:005 SHPD Historic Site Number 60-04-1032 Abstract St. Joseph Catholic Church is a small wooden church by the side of the road. It is architecturally interesting for its pleasing proportions and tall, graceful belfry and steeple rising above the west gable. The St. Joseph Catholic Church was built by Father Damien and is closely connected with his ministry in Molokai. Kaluaaha Church

Address Kamehameha V Highway, Kalua‘aha, Molokai 96748 TMK (2) 5-7-011:064 SHPD Historic Site Number 60-05-1002 Abstract Kalua‘aha Church is constructed out of fieldstone walls plastered on both sides which are about 40 inches thick and almost 20 feet high. The structure also has exterior buttresses and concrete facing which was added around 1917. Kalua‘aha Church was the mother church of Molokai and served as the center of Congregational activity for the island. This structure is also an important architectural monument for size, construction, and unique features. Kilohana School

Address Kamehameha V Highway, Ualapue, Molokai 96748 TMK (2) 5-6-002:008 SHPD Historic Site Number 60-04-1038 Abstract Kilohana School is located along Kamehameha Highway on a sloped site at the foothills of Ualapue. There is a large, open play area in front of the main building with a service road between the school and the playground. The one-story tongue-and-groove wooden building is asymmetrical in plan. Kilohana School is significant for its place in history as one of the oldest schools on Molokai and for its importance in the community; first as the County hospital for the entire island of Molokai, then as the public school for East Molokai. Molokai Public Library

The library is housed in a one-story wooden building with horizontal wood siding. The building is raised approximately two feet above grade with concrete foundations and low plants surrounding the base of the building. The Molokai Public Library, built in 1937, is significant for its history as the only public library on Molokai, as well as for its architectural significance as an outstanding public structure. 1813 Baldwin Avenue/ Fred C. Baldwin Memorial Home

Address 1813 Baldwin Avenue, Makawao, Maui 96779 TMK (2) 2-5-004:007 SHPD Historic Site Number 50-05-9092 National Register of Historic Places #11000437 Abstract Designed by Honolulu architect H.L. Kerr, the Fred Baldwin Memorial Home consists of seven original buildings, two sheds, and two additions that appear to have been constructed by the Maui Land & Pineapple Company. The dominant style of the complex is Craftsman, however, the buildings are embellished with ah aclectic mix of Craftsman, Neo-Classical, and vernacular Japanese details. The Fred Baldwin Memorial Home was also used as a local institution for elderly European, Anglo- and Euro-American men which was established by Henry Perrine Baldwin in 1909 in memory of his son, Fred, who died in 1905. Ahahui Kalanianaole (Kalanianaole Hall)

Address 605 Maunaloa Highway, Kaunakakai, Molokai 96748 TMK (2) 5-2-009:018 (portion) SHPD Historic Site Number 60-03-1028 Abstract Ahahui Kalanianaole, also known as Kalanianaole Hall, is a one-story wooden structure with a large, wood-shingle hip roof and tongue-and-groove walls. The front entrance is through a central, projecting concrete porch several steps up from the ground covered by a hip and valley roof. All four sides of the structure have symmetrically placed windows in two groups of three. Ahahui Kalanianaole is significant because of its history as the meeting hall of Hawaiian benevolent organizations whose purpose was to care for sick members and to give its dead a fitting burial. In addition, the building is an example of Hawaiian vernacular and plantation architecture of the 1920s and 30s. Bank of Hawaii, Haiku Branch

Address 771 Haiku Road, Haiku, Maui 96708 TMK (2) 2-7-020:008 SHPD Historic Site Number 50-06-1637 National Register of Historic Places #00001284 Abstract This former Bank of Hawaii (1931-1938), and United States Post Service (1938-1956), is a 1,120 square foot concrete and masonry structure built in a "Hawaiian Regional Style," often cited as the "C.W. Dickey style". Typical of the style is the steeply sloped, double-pitched, hipped roof and large windows. The former Bank of Hawaii building is significant for its association with the Hawaiian Regional Style of architecture that developed in the 1920s and is emblematic of the C.W. Dickey. The architectural/engineering firm of Rothwell and Lester was influenced considerably by Dickey and worked with him on numerous occasions. It is also significant for its historical importance as an anchoring facility in a small plantation town. It is the only remaining intact structure from the commercial center of Haiku in the 1930s.
