Address 3059 Umi Street, 4396 Rice Street, Lihue, Kauai 96766 TMK (4) 3-6-005:001,002,003 SHPD Historic Site Number 30-11-9351 Historic District National Register of Historic Places #81000204 Abstract The Lihue Civic Center Historic District is comprised of a park and three buildings: the County Building, the County Building Annex, and the County Courthouse. All features are located within one city block, a large open space in the heart of downtown Lihue and all are of masonry construction one or two stories in height, which is in keeping with the scale of the city. The Lihue Civic Center Historic District, as the center of government activity on the island of Kauai, is of local political and governmental significance. The buildings, which were built within a twenty-five-year period, represent the architectural aspirations of their time, employing the popular Neoclassical revival and Spanish Mission revival styles. Address 4650 Ohiki Road, Hanalei, Kauai 96714 TMK (4) 5-4-003:007 SHPD Historic Site Number 30-03-9385 National Register of Historic Places #83000252 Abstract When constructed in 1930, the Haraguchi Rice Mill was a one-story structure, wood framed, walled and roofed in corrugate iron built on a concrete pad. The interior consisted of the engine room, milling area, storage area for both finished and unprocessed rice. In November 1982, Hurricane Iwa tore off the roof and siding and the framed structure collapsed; however the machines remained intact. The Haraguchi Rice Mill is significant for the agricultural history of the Hanalei area and the contribution to the economy of Hawaii by the Japanese immigrants.  The Haraguchi Rice Mill was the last mill to operate in Hanalei Valley and the only remaining rice mill in the State of Hawaii. Address 5183 Kuhio Highway, Hanalei, Kauai 96714 TMK (4) 5-5-009:008 SHPD Historic Site Number 30-03-9387 National Register of Historic Places #90000344 Abstract Hanalei Elementary School is a single-story wood construction building consisting of five classrooms. The building features an inset lanai and a hipped-roof entry. The State Department of Education constructed a new building on the grounds of the Hanalei School and intended to demolish the 1926 school building; however the current owners purchased the building and moved it to a new location in Hanalei. Although the building has been moved, it is significant for its exemplification of a period and type of design and construction, and as an embodiment of the Department of Public Education's expansion in Hanalei in the 1920s. Address 4050 Nawiliwili Road, Lihue, Kauai 96766 TMK (4) 3-6-001:002, :010, :017 SHPD Historic Site Number 30-11-9301 Historic District National Register of Historic Places #74000722 Abstract The Grove Farm site consists of domestic buildings in addition to the buildings that were necessary for the sugar plantation. Grove Farm shows the development of a sugar plantation, and its earliest structure is the original house which pre-dates 1854. Grove Farm is the finest example in Hawaii of a complete plantation operation still in its original form. Grove Farm features Hawaiian architecture of varying ages and functions, native Hawaiian woods in its buildings, and a collection of early furnishings, household goods, tools, machinery, and equipment. Address 3500 Kilauea Road, Kilauea, Kauai 96754 TMK (4) 5-2-004:017 SHPD Historic Site Number 30-04-300 National Register of Historic Places #79000759 Abstract Kilauea Point Light Station stands on the rocky promontory of Point Kilauea, projecting from the northern headlands of Kauai, Hawaii's northwestern-most island. "Kilauea" is said to mean in Hawaiian, "rising vapor cloud," an appellation derived from clouds of sea mist that sometimes hang over Kauai's north coast. The Kilauea Point Light Station is nationally significant not only for its association with the evolution of trans-oceanic commerce, but also for its retention of unique architectural characteristics representative of the U.S. maritime tradition in the early twentieth century. Address 2440 Kolo Road, Kilauea, Kauai 96754 TMK (4) 5-2-009:006 SHPD Historic Site Number 30-04-9384 National Register of Historic Places #83000254 Abstract The Kilauea School sits on a 6.5-acre parcel on the outer fringes of the former Kilauea Plantation Community. The school consists of three buildings: an administration-classroom building, a cafeteria, and a former teacher's cottage. The buildings are sited on the back portion of their lot with an extensive lawn in front, allowing for a sweeping view of the entire campus. The Kilauea School is significant as a typical rural schoolhouse on the island of Kauai and for its associations with the development of public education in the town of Kilauea. Address 3-3556 Kuhio Highway, Lihue, Kauai 96766 TMK N/A SHPD Historic Site Number 30-08-9353 National Register of Historic Places #78001025 Abstract The Lihue Hongwanji Mission is a simple, single-story wood-frame structure with a hip roof with small gable ends under the ridge at either end of the building, and two square columns situated on a raised front entry porch with wood balustrades. The interior is comprised of a single space with a large altar opposite the entryway. This historic temple is significant for its historical, social, and religious contributions to the Lihue Buddhist Community. The Lihue Hongwanji Mission is also an example of historic architecture associated with Japanese immigration and acculturation in Hawaii during the 20th century.
