Mann House, built in 1954, is significant for its association with the development of the Tantalus area as a mountain retreat and residential district during the 20th century. This house is also significant as the work of master architect Albert Ely Ives whose prolific and renowned residential commissions during the 1950's elevated him to prominance among his colleagues. The James B. Mann House is superior in its synthesis of Japanese influence and Hawaiian regional design by virtue to its use of local materials. This emphasis on local materials is an important marker for Hawaiian regional design, and the Mann House is the best known example of this characteristic in Ives' residential work. Address 158 & 164 Poloke Place, Honolulu HI 96822 TMK (1) 2-2-015:004 SHPD Historic Site Number 80-14-9049 Abstract The Withington Cottage & Henry R. Hewitt Residence are significant for their association with the early development of the Tantalus residential community. Withington Cottage, built in 1925, and the Harry R. Hewitt Residence, built in 1926, are examples of early modern-day residences that encompass an architectureal scale, design, materials, site placement, and garden setting that reflect the rustic association of the Tantalus area during the 1920's. Withington Cottage is also significant as an example of an upper middle-class bungalow designed by architect Hart Wood, who was closely associated with the movement to develop a regional style of architectural design in Hawaii during the 1920's and 1930's. Address 118 Poloke Place, Honolulu HI 96822 TMK (1) 2-5-015:007 SHPD Historic Site Number 80-14-9080 Abstract The Alfred W. and Anna P. Sturgis Residence is a typical 1950's style home on O`ahu. Renowned Honolulu architect Alfred W. Sturgis designed this simple, yet distinctive, house for himself and his family.  Its Modern style, well handled indoor-outdoor relationships, concise use of open of space, and high attention to detail readily demonstrate it to be the work of a highly skilled architect. The residence is located in a quiet neighborhood at the lower end of Tantalus' Forest Ridge. Situated alone Poloke Place, just off Forest Ridge Way, the property lies on the level, upper-most part of a downward sloping, 11,760 square foot lot, with a sweeping view of the Pacific Ocean. Address 4069 Round Top Drive, Honolulu, HI 96822 TMK (1) 2-5-016:024 SHPD Historic Site Number 80-14-9717 Abstract The Fullard-Leo Residence, also known as "Murrurundi," was built in 1922. This one-story stucco on concrete house sits on a steeply sloping lot and has a hipped metal roof with closed overhanging eaves and two sets of double French doors with round arched tracery. The interior features built-in furniture, a dining nook with casement windows, and a fireplace. The Leslie Vincent & Eleanor Fullard-Leo Residence is significant for its association with the development of the Tantalus residential community. It is typical of the type of residential mountain retreat built in the community during the early 1920s and is included in the Tantalus Residences Thematic District. Address 4191 Round Top Drive, Honolulu, HI 96822 TMK (1) 2-5-016:031 SHPD Historic Site Number 80-14-9811 Abstract Built around 1920, this two-story shingled bungalow is situated on a steeply sloped lot and has a gable roof with double bird's mouth brackets in the eaves, gable ends with louvered vents flanked by square windows with start-burst patterned muntins, and an enclosed porch on the front facade. The interior features a coffered ceiling, stone fireplace, original woodwork, and a grand staircase leading to the lower level. The Mrs. C. W. Case Deering Residence is significant for its association with the early development of the Tantalus residential community.  It also embodies distinctive characteristics of the houses built in the community in the 1920s and is included in the Tantalus Residences Thematic District. It is a two-story clapboard house and it sits on a steeply sloped lot, has a cruciform design plan, and a hipped roof with closed eaves, exposed rafters, and bracketing. The interior features a brick fireplace, board and batten walls and ceilings, built-in cabinets and bookshelves, and bracketed window sills and plate rail. The James A. Wilder Residence is significant for its association with the the early development of the Tantalus residential community.  It is also significant as an early example of a craftsman style residence in Hawaii and is included in the Tantalus Residences Thematic District. Address 2721 Kolonahe Place, Honolulu, HI 96813 TMK (1) 2-5-023:045 SHPD Historic Site Number 80-14-9005 Abstract The Leong/Chun House, built in 1955, is a two-story house. The structure has a flat roof and is comprised of cantilevered steel I-beams and exterior walls of white brick and wood resting on a concrete brick foundation. The interior features exposed beams and rafters, structural brick walls, and a fireplace with copper hood and light colored kiln brick wall. The Leong/Chun House is significant as an example of the work of locally renown architect Alfred Preis. It is also an example of the International style of architecture built in Hawaii in the 1950s. Address 1651 Young Street, Honolulu, HI 96826 TMK (1) 2-8-001:029 SHPD Historic Site Number 80-14-9003 Abstract The Kohatsu Residence, was built in 1912 and in 1952 an apartment building was added to the property. This property has two significant structures: a single-story residence with exterior wood shingles, hipped roof, and wide overhanging eaves with exposed rafter tails; and a two-story apartment building. The interior of the house features high ceilings, large rooms, tongue and groove redwood walls, cove moulding, and carved wood baseboards. The Kohatsu Residence is significant as an example of a well-built cottage constructed in the Pawa‘a District of Honolulu before 1920 and for its association with Dr. Yukihide Kohatsu, a local physician. The apartment building is significant as an example of the type of architecture built in Honolulu in the early 1950's. Address 1519 Oliver Street, Honolulu, HI 96822 TMK (1) 2-8-013:082 SHPD Historic Site Number 80-14-9835 Abstract The House at 1519 Oliver Street was built in 1926 on a partial lava rock foundation and is basically rectangular in plan. The roof is a combination hip and gable, and the interior walls and ceilings are finished with three-inch tongue-and-groove boards. The House at 1519 Oliver Street is significant as an intact example of Craftsman style architecture in the area surrounding the residence.
