Mounted above water on approximately 35 embedded concrete legs, each quay was constructed on poured concrete. Both large and small mooring cleats were mounted on the top edge of each quay to secure ship mooring lines. Each quay was painted white for high visibility. The mooring quays are significant for their association with the December 7, 1941, attack on Pearl Harbor and they played a significant role in salvage work after the attack. The building was originally set off by itself, separated from the housing and administrative areas of the base by open space, stables, and warehouses. The stockade is now surrounded by buildings of varied functions. Constructed in 1918, the building is a one-story structure in an L-shaped plan. The stockade building is a significant element of Schofield Barracks as one of the early permanent structures at the post and for the essential role it has played. Although the building has undergone some renovations, most of these have been on the interior of the building, and the structure retains its historic exterior appearance. Address Ford Island Honolulu, HI 96818 TMK (1) 9-9 SHPD Historic Site Number 80-13-9817 National Register of Historic Places #89001084 The hulk of the battleship USS Utah (BB-31 and AG-16) lies in some 40 feet of water off Ford Island in Pearl Harbor. It is located at berth F-11, to which she was moored on the morning of December 7, 1941, when she was sunk by attacking Japanese forces. As built in 1909, the USS Utah was a steel-hulled battleship of the Florida class. Utah was 521.6 feet in length, with a 88.3 foot beam and a 28.4 foot draft. The battle-scarred and submerged remains of the battleship and target ship are the focal point of a shrine erected by the people of the United States to honor Utah's crew, some of whom lost their lives while trying to save their torpedoed ship during the attack. The intact battleship hull is a unique well-preserved entity with considerable architectural integrity. Utah's exceptional national significance is enhanced by its status as one of only two surviving early American "dreadnoughts," as well as the only unaltered pre-World War II target ship (AG-16). Address 63 Cowpens Street/Pier F-5 Honolulu, HI 96818 TMK (1) 9-9-003 SHPD Historic Site Number 80-13-9817 National Register of Historic Places #71000877 Abstract The Battleship Missouri is an Iowa-class battleship located in Pearl Harbor, moored at Ford Island along pier F-5. The battleship was originally constructed for the US Navy in 1941 in the New York Naval Shipyard. The ship is 887' 3" long with a 108' 3" beam and 209' 8" in height from keel to mast-top. The ship displaces 45,000 tons when empty with a draft of 38'. The ship retains the design features of her original 1940s construction with specific changes made to allow the addition of modern weapons platforms during her 1980s modernization. The USS Missouri reflects the final evolution of battleship design and is a tangible example of American invention, engineering, and transportation capabilities. It embodies American military, maritime, political, and social history as a vital participant in defense of our nation from World War II to Desert Storm. As the site of the formal ceremony ending World War II, the USS Missouri is uniquely qualified as an internationally significant historic site and will forever reflect the strength and determination of our nation and hope for a world at peace. Address 11 Arizona Memorial Drive Aiea, HI 96701 TMK (1) 9-9-003:031 SHPD Historic Site Number 80-13-1356 National Historic Landmark National Register of Historic Places #82000149 Abstract The USS Bowfin was launched at Portsmouth, New Hampshire, on December 7, 1942, and was commissioned there on May 1, 1943. She is a fleet-type submarine of the Balao class. The pressure hull of the USS Bowfin is reinforced with high tensile steel to enable her to operate at depths in excess of 400 feet. In the conflict with Japan in World War II, the role and importance of the submarine forces of the United States cannot be overestimated. The USS Bowfin is credited with sinking 16 enemy vessels for a total of 67,882 tons. The USS Bowfin represents the role of Pearl Harbor in the submarine war against Japan.
