Abstract
The Ahole holua is a constructed ramp made up of stacked stones, and is almost exactly 23 m long. On the bluff to the north of the holua are large numbers of what appear to be the gallery terraces. This is one of the best preserved holua on Hawaii Island, and within the entire state. These were used as tracks for wooden toboggans or sleds by the ancient Hawaiians. A holua of this magnitude and elegance indicates the complexity of ancient Hawaiian culture, wherein large labor forces could be marshaled to produce a luxury structure dedicated to a recreational use by the higher-ranking Hawaiians.
