Abstract
Approved for Criterion C (Architecture and Engineering). The Henderson Residence is significant as a good example of a house built in Honolulu during the 1930s in a modern Hawaiian style with art deco overtones. It is a superb and rare example of Honolulu architect Harry Sims Bent’s’ residential work with its fine attention to detail and immaculate indoor-outdoor relationships. In addition, the house is significant for the design of its grounds, which are reminiscent of Bent’s work at Ala Moana Park for the Mughal courtyard in the McCoy Pavilion.
