NPS Accepts SHPD Final Report on Corrective Action

7/9/14: The National Park Service informed the Hawai‘i State Historic Preservation Division that it had received the final report on the Correction Action Plan (2). NPS commended the division for making progress on the identified shortcomings in securing staff and instituting standard operating procedures. However, the division still needs to address several incomplete requirements, including an audit of operations, developing a survey inventory database, and completing a strategic plan. Until the final items are complete, the division remains a “high-risk grantee.” Download Letter (PDF)

July 24 – “The Restoration of Family Ties: Bringing Home the Families of Kalaupapa” Presentation

The public is invited to a free illustrated presentation by Valerie Monson of Ka ‘Ohana O Kalaupapa on Thursday, July 24, 5:30 – 7:00 p.m., at Native Books/Nā Mea Hawai‘i, Ward Center, 1050 Ala Moana Blvd., Honolulu. Ka ‘Ohana O Kalaupapa uses a growing collection of information they have compiled from various archives and other sources to bring the people of Kalaupapa back into the history that they helped to create and help families remember these ancestors with love and pride. The event is co-sponsored by Historic Hawai‘i Foundation, Ka ‘Ohana O Kalaupapa and Native Books/Nā Mea Hawai‘i. Download Flier

Hawaii Island’s Mokuaikaua Church named one of America’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places of 2014

Mokuaikaua Church in Kona on Hawaii Island has made this year's list!  Read more about the church and the most endangered historic places in America list below  (content from The National Trust for Historic Preservation). __________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Photo by Steve Conger The National Trust for Historic Preservation's 11 Most Endangered Historic Places of 2014 Mokuaikaua Church Year Listed: 2014 Location: Kailua Village in Kona, Hawaii Threat: Deterioration Significance Mokuaikaua Church, Hawaii’s first Christian Church, is a large stone building located in the center of Historic Kailua Village in Kona, Hawaii. Its iconic steeple stands out conspicuously among the low rise village and has become a landmark for nearly 200 years from both land and sea. Completed in 1837 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978, Mokuaikaua Church represents the new, western-influenced architecture of early 19th century Hawaii. This stone and mortar building is believed to be built out of stones taken from a nearby heiau (Hawaiian temple) with mortar made of burned coral. Construction beams are made from Hawaiian ohia wood joined with ohia pins. The building has suffered from earthquake damage, as well as dysfunctional and faulty electrical wiring, termite damage, and dry-rot damage to beams in the steeple and wooden window frames. A Hawaiian landmark for nearly 200 years,  Mokuaikaua Church now needs immediate attention if it is to be saved. Visit the Mokuaikaua Church's website for more information. ~                       ~                          ~                         ~                            ~                            ~ About America's 11 Most Endangered Historic Places Since 1988, the National Trust for Historic Preservation has used its list of America's 11 Most Endangered Historic Places to raise awareness about the threats facing some of the nation's greatest treasures. Wilkes Campsite

Address Volcanoes National Park, Hawaii TMK (3) 9-9-001:003 SHPD Historic Site Number 10-50-5507 National Register of Historic Places #74000295 Abstract Wilkes Camp is an area adjacent to the east rim of the summit crater of Mauna Loa volcano, at an altitude of 13,240 feet above sea level. High stone walls were constructed in December 1840 around individual temporary structures, and abandoned in January 1841. The United States sent a scientific expedition into the vast Pacific Ocean, led by Lieutenant Charles Wilkes. For three and a half weeks American scientists conducted experiments on Mauna Loa while experiencing blizzards, freezing temperatures, and altitude sickness. The campsite ruins are the only known physical evidence of the U.S. Exploring Expedition. This list of Hawaii’s historic properties is provided as a public service by Historic Hawaii Foundation. Kilauea Crater

Address Volcanoes National Park, Hawaii TMK (3) 9-9-001:001 SHPD Historic Site Number 10-52-5502 National Register of Historic Places #74000291 Abstract Kilauea Crater is a part of one of the world's most active volcanoes. The crater is roughly circular, and is approximately 2 miles long on its north-south diameter and 1-3/4 miles long on its east-west diameter. Kilauea Crater is well defined by almost vertical walls on all but a portion of the southern rim. The frequent, almost continual, centering of volcanic activity at Kilauea Crater in prehistoric and historic times has affected human life, cultures, religions, and undertakings. Address Volcanoes National Park, Hawaii TMK (3) 9-9-001:003 SHPD Historic Site Number 10-50-5501 National Historic District National Register of Historic Places #74000290 Abstract The Ainapo Trail is a narrow, single-file, twisting, and occasionally slightly abraded trail above the 11,600 elevation.  It leads up the broad southeast flank of Mauna Loa volcano to and along the east side of Mokuaweoweo, the major summit crater. Ahole Holua Complex

Address Puu Hinahina Bay, South Kona, Hawaii 96704 TMK (3) 8-9-006:003 SHPD Historic Site Number N/A National Register of Historic Places #73000655 Abstract The Ahole holua is a constructed ramp made up of stacked stones, and is almost exactly 23 m long.  On the bluff to the north of the holua are large numbers of what appear to be the gallery terraces. This is one of the best preserved holua on Hawaii Island, and within the entire state.  These were used as tracks for wooden toboggans or sleds by the ancient Hawaiians. A holua of this magnitude and elegance indicates the complexity of ancient Hawaiian culture, wherein large labor forces could be marshaled to produce a luxury structure dedicated to a recreational use by the higher-ranking Hawaiians. This list of Hawaii’s historic properties is provided as a public service by Historic Hawaii Foundation. 1790 Footprints

Address Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park, Hawaii 96718 TMK (3) 9-9-001:001, :002 SHPD Historic Site Number 10-61-5505 National Register of Historic Places #74000351 Abstract The area consists of scattered fossil footprints of men, women, and children, and hoofprints of hogs in hardened, cement-like ash. Many historians and Hawaiians believe the footprints were made by the warriors of Keoua Kuahu'ula who were traveling with their families; or else by a detached group of relatives of Keoua's army. Keoua and his army passed through the Ka‘u Desert during the 1790 steam-blast eruption of Kilauea.
