Abstract
Built in 1939, the Guard Residence is a two-story, stone and stucco building in an eclectic combination of Spanish Revival, Craftsman, and Art Deco styles. The house sits a the top of a hill, and it features a basically rectangular plan. The structure has an intersecting, hip, clay shingle roof with horizontal vents at the gables and a slight flare at the eaves with exposed rounded rafter ends. A wood balcony spans the main part of the house. The Guard Residence is architecturally significant for its unique blend of the modern movement as evident with its Modernistic or Art Deco detailing and the Spanish Colonial Revival style. The residence is also located in one of the first subdivisions in the Manoa Valley.
