Mauna Loa Road runs northwest from Highway 11 about 11.2 miles up the side of Mauna Loa to approximately the 6,700-foot elevation. Mauna Loa Road is significant for its association with the history of National Park Service Road design and construction principles as well as the National Park Service Rustic style. It illustrates the difference between park roads intended for visitor use and truck trails for administrative use.
