Preservation Honor Awards Postponed to 2025

Historic Hawai‘i Foundation has presented the Preservation Honor Awards since 1975 to recognize outstanding accomplishments in the field of historic preservation. The Awards are an important means to share successes and best practices across many disciplines and in celebration of different types of places, the people who are caring for them, and the many ways that preservation can happen.

As Historic Hawai‘i Foundation prepares to celebrate its 50th Anniversary in 2024, the Awards will take a different form. We will be looking back at five decades of preservation achievements, the lessons learned, places saved and places lost. HHF has presented some 775 Preservation Honor Awards and Anniversary Recognitions. These places and achievements will be further highlighted during the Anniversary year.

With this shift in focus, the annual Preservation Honor Awards will be suspended in 2023 and 2024. When the regular program resumes in 2025 the eligibility period will be extended beyond the usual two-year time span and instead allow nominations for project completed in 2021 – 2024.

To help build a robust list of potential honorees when the call for nominations is issued in Fall 2024, we welcome preliminary descriptions to be sent to Historic Hawai‘i Foundation at any time. Our staff will compile these and include them in the outreach efforts next year. We hope this will be helpful as a reminder of good work and outcomes when the call for nominations is issued.

About the Preservation Honor Awards

The Historic Preservation Honor Awards are Hawai‘i’s highest recognition of projects, organizations, publications or individuals active in preservation, rehabilitation, restoration, or interpretation of the State’s archaeological, architectural, and cultural sites.  The Preservation Honor Awards are designed to recognize achievements in interpreting, preserving or restoring Hawai‘i’s built environment.

Nominations are considered by a committee of professionals who are invited to serve on the Historic Preservation Honor Awards Committee.

Each nomination is considered on its own merit and not in competition with others.  The Committee reserves the right to select multiple awards or no awards in each category.  Nominations from all counties are encouraged.

Since 1975, the Historic Hawai‘i Foundation has selected historic preservation honor award winners throughout the State of Hawai‘i.
