2022 Preservation Honor Awards Ceremony and Reception

On Thursday, October 20th, Historic Hawai‘i Foundation had the honor of presenting fourteen Preservation Awards and twenty-five Anniversary Recognitions at the 48th annual Preservation Honor Awards Ceremony and Reception. Over 175 guests gathered at the Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Ho‘okupu Center in Honolulu to celebrate significant achievements in the preservation of Hawai‘i’s unique history, distinctive architecture and sacred places.

Emcee Paula Akana, executive director of Friends of Iolani Palace and former reporter and anchor with KITV Island News, announced each award with delight and much aloha spirit. Preservation Awards were given in four categories–Individual Achievement, Achievements in Interpretive Media, Programmatic Award, and Project Award–representing diverse projects from across the state.

This year’s event featured a special recognition. The Frank Haines Award for Lifetime Achievement honors an individual’s lifetime commitment and contributions to the preservation of Hawai‘i’s heritage. As the award was not given last year during the pandemic, this year the award was presented to two individuals, Tonia Moy, AIA, Vice President and Director of Preservation, Fung Associates, Inc. and Ann K. Yoklavich, Architectural Historian (consultant), each of whom have had lasting impact.

Historic Hawai‘i Foundation is pleased to recognize the Preservation Honor Award honorees of 2022.

This year’s honorees reflect an admirable commitment to preserve Hawai‘i’s heritage through extraordinary focus, integrity and grit.  From the preservation of one of the oldest and most significant historic landmarks remaining in the Islands, to the rehabilitation of a Mid-Century Modern public library, the individuals, projects and programs to be recognized this year exemplify the importance of preserving Hawai‘i’s rich history and culture.

The Preservation Awards also honors the major anniversaries of local organizations, businesses and places, commemorating their longevity as vital contributors to the Hawaiian Islands.

Thanks to the support of our members, event sponsors, and the efforts of our preservation community, this year’s Preservation Awards program showcased the rich history and diversity of the Hawaiian Islands and why preservation matters.

2022 RECIPIENTS OF THE FRANK HAINES AWARD FOR LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT

To recognize an individual’s lifetime commitment and contributions to the preservation of Hawai‘i’s heritage. As the award was not given last year during the pandemic, this year the award will be presented to two individuals who have had a lasting impact through their outstanding efforts to document, preserve, protect and celebrate Hawai‘i’s historic places.

Tonia Moy, AIA, Vice President and Director of Preservation, Fung Associates, Inc.

Tonia Moy’s comprehensive career in historic preservation spans over three decades of work throughout Hawai‘i. As vice president of Fung Associates, Inc., Tonia also serves as the firm’s Director of Preservation to oversee compliance and consistency in the historic review process. She tirelessly serves as a mentor, helping to nurture preservation-minded practitioners; the progression of FAI’s preservation team is a testimonial to her attributes. Prior to this, Tonia worked for many years at the Hawai‘i State Historic Preservation Division where she last served as the architecture branch chief.

Tonia is an active preservation advocate through community organizations as well, including Docomomo, Historic Hawai‘i Foundation, and the Dean’s Advisory Committee at the School of Architecture, University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa.

Ann K. Yoklavich, Architectural Historian (consultant)

Architectural Historian Ann Yoklavich’s lifetime passion has been to research and record Hawai‘i’s history through the lens of the built environment. Her investigations into historic properties–both military and civilian–have spanned not only the Hawaiian Islands, but also remote sites throughout the Pacific. As an architectural historian who meets the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualification Standards for history, Ann worked with Mason Architects Inc. (MASON) for over three decades, earning a reputation for scholarship, accuracy and rigor.

Throughout her time at MASON, Ann served as a mentor and teacher to emerging architectural historian professionals both within and outside of MASON. She retired at the end of 2021.

One of Ann’s “labors of love” has been a dedication to sharing with the public her knowledge of Hawai‘i’s architectural history. For many years, Ann has given selflessly of her time, and continues to lead architectural walking tours of downtown Honolulu for the American Institute of Architects and volunteer with HHF.

About the Preservation Honor Awards

Since 1975, the Historic Hawai‘i Foundation has selected historic preservation honor award winners throughout the State of Hawai‘i.

The honorees are selected by a committee comprised of professionals in architecture, history, planning, landscape architecture, architectural history and media. Each nomination is considered on its own merits and not in competition with others.

Presented annually since 1975, the Preservation Honor Awards program offers the local community an opportunity to share, recognize and applaud excellence in historic preservation in the Hawaiian Islands. The event brings together professionals and academia in the preservation field and community volunteers who believe in the power of preserving historic places for the common good.
