- Or would you like to give special recognition to someone you know for his/her contributions to preserving historic places in Hawai‘i?
Nominate the project or person to the 2022 Preservation Honor Awards!
Historic Hawai‘i Foundation is currently seeking nominations for Preservation Awards in several categories, including honors presented for specific preservation or rehabilitation projects; printed publications or visual presentations which interpret the history or preservation of a site; and for individuals who engage in efforts that support preservation. You can help give recognition to and increase awareness of preservation achievements in your community by submitting a nomination.
The nomination process begins with submitting all required information via an online nomination form (see the link and instructions below and at right). Nominators are asked to provide clear and concise information about the project/person in order to make a strong case for recognition.
The nomination fee is $50, payable by Paypal or credit card when the nomination is submitted.
- Deadline for online nomination submittal: Monday, July 25, 2022. Hard copies due to HHF by August 1.
- The 47th Annual Preservation Honor Awards Ceremony is tentatively scheduled to be held in Honolulu on Friday, October 14, 2022 (in person preferred, but virtual possible).
AWARD CATEGORIES
- Project Awards
Preservation Award for a specific project that preserved, rehabilitated, or restored a historic property. A specific site, building, structure, district or property must be identified, and the selected preservation treatment (preservation, restoration, rehabilitation, or reconstruction) must be explained.
- Achievements in Interpretive Media
Recognizes a printed publication, video, maps and brochures, digital application or visual presentation that interprets the history, preservation or physical characteristics of a historic property. A specific site(s), building(s), structure(s), district(s) or property must be identified.
- Programmatic Awards
Programmatic Awards for an advocacy, educational, programmatic, or other activity that promotes preservation efforts. Either site-specific or broad-based efforts may be identified.
- Individual Achievement
Recognizes a leader in the preservation field who has made achievements in preserving places significant to the history of Hawai‘i. Either site-specific or broad-based efforts may be identified. Nominations for lifelong achievement as well as emerging leaders will be considered.
- Achievements in New Construction
Achievements in New Construction for new infill in a historic district or additions to a historic property that protect and enhance the character of the historic resource.
ELIGIBILITY
- Nomination may be submitted by any member of the public. Self-nominations are accepted.
- Nominations may be made to recognize individuals, organizations, businesses, or government.
- Nominations for posthumous awards will not be considered.
- Any aspect of preservation, restoration, rehabilitation, or interpretation of Hawaiʻi’s historic or cultural properties that is exemplary and encourages preservation is eligible. This may include: acquisition, adaptive reuse, advocacy, archaeology, education, publication, legislation, photography, planning, preservation, protection, stabilization, technology, rehabilitation, restoration, or reconstruction activities.
- Projects must have been completed within the past two years, specifically between January 1, 2020 and July 25, 2022. All work must be completed within these dates.
- Phased projects may be considered if the nominated phase can stand on its own merits and is complete. Otherwise, the nomination should be held until all phases are complete and included.
- Previous recipients are eligible for a new award, provided that the current nomination is based on a different project or significant achievements have been made since the previous award was presented.
- Nominations must include all parties/stakeholders involved in a project or program. Identifying and including all appropriate parties is the responsibility of the nominator.

NOMINATION CHECKLIST
All Nominations are to be submitted using the Online Nomination Form for the appropriate Award Category (listed in right sidebar). Once begun, the form can be saved for later edits or completion. HHF recommends that nominators prepare all submittal requirements in advance, including responses to narrative sections; saving, labeling and compressing all photographs and other attachments; and completing the stakeholders and photograph worksheets. Once all materials are ready and saved, then begin the online submittal form. Information may be copied and pasted from the nominator’s prepared documents and attachments may be uploaded.
The Historic Preservation Honor Awards are Hawai‘i’s highest recognition of projects, organizations, publications or individuals active in preservation, rehabilitation, restoration, or interpretation of the State’s archaeological, architectural, and cultural sites.
Nominations are considered by a committee of professionals who are invited to serve on the Historic Preservation Honor Awards Committee. Each nomination is considered on its own merit and not in competition with others. The Committee reserves the right to select multiple awards or no awards in each category. Nominations from all counties are encouraged.

After reviewing the instructions, click Continue; you’ll receive a unique URL for your form. PLEASE SAVE THE URL–you’ll need it to re-access the form.
A FEW TIPS – We recommend following these steps:
- Preview the nomination form: download the PDF pertaining to the Award Category you are submitting to (see the blue buttons);
- Prepare your responses in a separate document; share it with colleagues for their input;
- Begin the online nomination. Copy & paste your responses into the online form.
- If you decide to take a break before you finish completing the form, be sure to follow the steps to save it and keep the URL.
