Abstract
The Withington Cottage & Henry R. Hewitt Residence are significant for their association with the early development of the Tantalus residential community. Withington Cottage, built in 1925, and the Harry R. Hewitt Residence, built in 1926, are examples of early modern-day residences that encompass an architectureal scale, design, materials, site placement, and garden setting that reflect the rustic association of the Tantalus area during the 1920’s. Withington Cottage is also significant as an example of an upper middle-class bungalow designed by architect Hart Wood, who was closely associated with the movement to develop a regional style of architectural design in Hawaii during the 1920’s and 1930’s.
