Maui Architectural Group
Jim Niess, AIA, is Principal and President of Maui Architectural Group. As the owner of Maui’s oldest architectural firm, Mr. Niess has been a practicing architect on Maui since 1973. The firm has been active in the restoration and adaptation of many of Maui’s landmark buildings, from Kealahou School to Old Hāna School to Ka‘ahumanu Church. Mr. Niess is twice past president of the Maui Chapter of the American Institute of Architects and recently retired member of the Maui County Cultural Resource Commission that oversees Maui’s Historical Districts. He is a former trustee of the Maui Historical Society. For the past ten years he has been an adviser to the Wailuku Main Street Task Force assigned to study revitalization of the town’s retail and business core. Mr. Niess worked with the County of Maui to draft a Small Town Zoning and Development Code for Wailuku. The main purpose is to provide code relief that encourages the continued use or reuse of the town’s existing structures.
