Abstract
The Hakalau Stream Bridge is a steel girder and trestle bridge with the total length of 775 feet, a 261-feet height over the stream bed, and a roadway width of 28 feet. The superstructure of the bridge is composed of a concrete deck on steel girders, and the substructure is composed of c.1911 steel railroad trestle supports with masonry (lava-rock) abutments. The Hakalau Stream Bridge is significant for its association with the Hilo Railroad Company. In addition it is significant for its association with three founders of the Hilo Railroad Company and as a representative example of early 20th-century engineering technology, as well as a source for information about early 20th-century steel manufacture and construction.
